Last week I posted a summary of the findings of Dan James’s research into the link between humble leadership and people thriving at work.

As I mentioned in that post, humility and effective leadership is not something I’ve explored in the past. But on thinking about this more, it is clear that there are strong links.  Demonstrating humility, for example a willingness to admit (and embrace!) weaknesses and to ask for help are
important leadership behaviours.

The work environment and the wider context are changing – we are in a turbulent and disrupted world. People have different expectations of their leaders.  What it takes to profitably serve to customers changes constantly. Leaders who believe they have all the answers and are always right will struggle.

To be effective today, leaders have to be skilled at including and drawing out contributions from many sources. They have to be curious and focused on learning. Learning requires humility.

If you want to be a better leader, lean into humility.

The document provides some practical tips for working on and demonstrating more humble leadership.
