Andy James is the founder of flockofcats.
He has wide-ranging experience in supporting the development of people, teams and organisations across multiple sectors in the UK and internationally.
Andy identified the need to take a different approach to development, in response to the dynamic and turbulent context which organisations face. He created flockofcats as the platform to drive this.
During the 20th century, in order to scale up our organisations, we invented bureaucracy and management approaches that increased production, efficiency and reliability. Many organisational practices are still based on this thinking.
It is clear that the organisational paradigms of the 20th century will not lead to success.
Andy believes that organisations need individuals to be at their best. However, success cannot rely just on individuals. In a complex and rapidly changing environment results are dependent upon collaboration and teaming within and across boundaries.
If we are to address new challenges, organisations need people to innovate, to provide their insights and ideas, to be creative, enthusiastic and collaborative.
Traditional, top-down leadership does not create the right conditions for this kind of work.
Andy is also clear that it is not just about results – it is about developing purposeful, and sustainable organisations that benefit all their stakeholders. Organisations in which people develop and are able to do what they do best. Organisations in which people come together to collaborate and adapt to overcome complex new challenges.

This principle also applies to how Andy approaches projects. Collaboration has always been at the heart of his work. He collaborates with a network of great people who share his passion.
This includes people with expertise across a wide range of disciplines. Most importantly, while they bring different perspectives, skills, experience, and insights, they also bring a mindset of collaboration, learning and adapting to deliver the best outcomes for clients.
As a leading member of the growing AQ community, Andy also has access to a global network of AQ coaches and consultants, the latest research, tools, and insight in this emerging and critical field.
Clients are also key members of our flockofcats. The flockofcats approach is based on the principles of curiosity, experimentation and adaptation, and a shared journey. We are not about pre-defined, off-the-shelf solutions. For this approach to work Andy’s relationships with clients are all about engaging together with the complex challenges of creating environments in which people thrive.
How flockofcats works
In order to help organisations to develop and maintain a thriving environment, our approach is based on undertaking initial enquiry, rather than offering pre-defined products. From this enquiry we work with you to design and carry out experiments aimed at finding out what works. As we learn together, patterns will emerge, and enable the elements of your thriving environment to be embedded.
In a turbulent and uncertain world, creating a thriving environment is not a destination. We will help you to develop a continuous process of adaptation so that you can still thrive in the future.
